Stump Cross 0  v  Warley Rangers  6   (09 Sep)

A comfortable away win against Stump made it 3 games unbeaten at the start of the season for Warley

A hat-trick from new boy Lee Wharton and further goals from Lee Burrows, Andy King and Scott Whelan made this an easy victory against a team who took 4 points of us last season whilst boss Paul Hiley was preparing himself for the delights of the San Siro in Milan. A welcome result awaited him on his return

Sowerby Utd  3  v  Warley Rangers 2   (17 Sep)

Warley recorded their 3rd away win on the trot with a 3-2 success at Sowerby United.

The blues started well playing up the slope (at Sowerbys new home for a season at Cemetary lane) without really creating any worthwhile chances to trouble the Sowerby keeper thus allowing the home team to start pressing down the slope. This resulted in a well worked goal from the fullback to give Sowerby the lead.

The blues responded well and pressure resulted in a fine strike from Wharton from 20 yards to equalise. But standards dropped from what is expected from the boss thus allowing Sowerby to grab another goal to take the lead into halftime.

For the first time this season harsh words were said at halftime and this resulted in a totally different team turning out for the second half. And after sustained pressure an equaliser came through the impressive Chris Hall. This goal seem to refresh the whole team and we started to play some expansive football and it was only a matter of time before the winner came. Again midfielder Hall was the saviour with a scrambled goal that kept up the winning start to the season.

-->> CUP<--

Warley Rangers  0  v  Ryburn Utd 1  (24 Sep)

Warleys cup run ended at the first hurdle as Premier Division Ryburn Uniteds 1-0 victory puts the away team in the hat for the second round.

A good old fashioned cup tie resulted in Warley suffering their first defeat of the season when a goal after 20 minutes sealed this win for the visitors. Despite good performances from the whole of the team Ryburn proved on this occasion to be just too strong!!!!

 Warley Rangers  1  v  Sowerby Utd  3  (01 Oct)

A sloppy performance by the home team resulted in this first league defeat against a team we had beat 2 weeks previous.

2 first half goals from Barber and Wilkinson put Sowerby in to a commanding lead at halftime. Warley played better in the second half but the game was already lost after the first half performance. And Sowerby went on to score another through Wilkinson and although Warley replied through Whelan and then missed a penalty through Grogan. Lets sign this away in the archives and leave it there!!!

Warley Rangers 13   v  Stump Cross 1  (08 Oct)

Bottom club Stump Cross were this weeks visitors to Warley who had to bounce back from last weeks defeat to maintain their push for the leadership of the division.

This was the Scott Whelan show as he probably broke Warleys scoring records by plundering 8 goals in a very one sided game.Braces from Chris Hall and Lee Wharton pushed it into double figures. And a headed goal from Simon Mitchell seconds after coming on finished the scoring for Warley.

Visibly outclassed Stump never once threw the towel in and they did score a goal of their own. This does help the goals for chart and lets keep the football flowing.

AFC Lords  1 v  Warley Rangers  1  (15 Oct)

Warley went in to this game on the back of a thumping win against bottom club Stump, but without front man Lee Wharton who sustained a knee injury playing squash.

The away team started the first half up hill and started to dominate from the off without really creating any clear cut chances. So as the half continued the Home team started to get more confident thus making it a good honest battle in midfield. With Warleys Lee Burrows, Chris Hall and Gary Kikutz prominent and Andy King and skipper Ben Gornall raiding up the flanks it stared to get entertaining. But then disaster struck as most of the team started to believe they could continue in the same vein as last week and Lords scored through Mitton. Warley then for the rest of the half struggled to get any control of the game and the half time whistle went

Harsh words from the boss were needed and the boys in blue started the second half as they had the first, Scott Whelan showing up well with his battling qualities. But chance after chance was missed, and also some dubious calls from the referee from at least 3 penalty shouts. As the game was drawing to a close it took Whelan to finally draw Warley level. And after another blatant penalty was again refused. A draw was the final result, point lost or point gained only time will tell!!!

Warley Rangers 6 v  Friendly 2  (22 Oct)

Warley returned back to winning ways after last weeks disappointing draw.

Three first half goals from Lee Wharton with 2 and Scott Whelan settled any nerves against derby rivals Friendly F.C. But a slightly nervy second half saw Friendly reduce the score with a goal from Disley and it wasnt until Gary Kikutz scored his brace that Warley could settle down and play some attractive football.

Friendly finished the scoring with a far post header from a corner

Holmfield 3  v  5  Warley Rangers  (29 Oct)

Warley returned from Holmfield with another 3 points to maintain their push for promotion.

In a bruising battle Warley opened the scoring with a 20 yard free-kick from the prolific Lee Wharton and then doubled their lead through strike partner Scott Whelan.

Holmfield then replied with a goal of their own. It took a wonderful and brave run from right mid-fielder Andy King to restore Warleys 2 goal advantage only for the home side to score a soft goal just before half-time

The second half continued in the same vein as the first with Wharton scoring Warleys 4th goal with a great run and shot only for Holmfield to again reduce the score from a free-kick. It was left for skipper Ben Gornall to break the off-side trap and finish with aplomb to secure a fantastic and worthy result. Lets see if we can continue in the same form next week away to Tyersal in the West Riding Cup

Tyersal FC  v   Warley Rangers  (05 Nov)

In cup football when your playing teams at a higher level, if your playing well you go in hope of an upset. If your not you go with a sense of playing with pride and keeping the score respectable.

Warley went to Tyersal on the back of one of their best starts to a season in a long while toping Division 1 whilst Tyersal would go 3rd in the West Riding Premier if they won their games in hand.Well we started well enough playing good football, but then disaster 3 chances 3 goals. Shellshocked is the word but then we again started to play attractive football without really creating any worthwhile chance. And then to compound our misery 5 minutes from half-time 2 more chances 2 more goals.Half-time 5 down .

We decided at half-time to try and keep it tight to start with and maybe nick a couple of goals down the hill to make the score respectable. This lasted a minute at the most as we conceded a 6th. The game then died as the home team slackened off and our heads were almost on the floor knowing the game was well and truelly lost.It wasnt until the last 10 minutes that goals 7,8and 9 were conceded, but it didnt really matter by then. Well and truelly beaten by a class act.

I think we can really say that nobody played bad its just that they were so much better. Good luck to Tyersal for the rest of the season in both their league and cups. As for us! well you can say that we will concentrate on the league!!!!!

St Andrews  0  v  2  Warley Rangers  *CUP (26 Nov)

Warley returned to action after a two week lay off with a cup match against Premier league team St Andrews.

Warley started this cup match on fire but after 15 minutes the 2 week lay off resulted in there play becoming disjointed. But having said that the only clear cut chances came our way, but Scott Whelan had clearly left his shooting boots at home. Half time came with the score 0-0 and with the opportunity of a win increasing we started to play the better football, chances started to come but Whelan and Wharton continued to fluff them and it was'nt until skipper Ben Gornall made a great run through the middle and smashed the ball into the roof of the net that we took the lead.

Manager Paul Hiley then made a change by bringing on Craig Beazley for Whelan which resulted in the former to leap like a salmon at a corner and bury the ball into the back of the net to put Warley through to the next round with a hard fought 2-0 win.

Warley Rangers  2  v  Salem  1 (03 Dec)

Warley continued their decent start to the season with a hard fought win against bogey team Salem.

Salem started the match missing 4 regular first teamers, but still put up a tremendous show to just come out second best in this hard but fair battle. They started the better and scored after 20 minutes and held the lead until half time.

But Warley are made of stern stuff this season and drew level on the hour  with a terrific strike from Burke. It was backs to the wall then for Salem as Warley pushed them back and really went for the jugular. But it was'nt until the last seconds that we got the winner. Another goal for Salem old boy Wharton.

Salem  0  v  Warley Rangers 4  (14 Jan 06)

A convincing away win by the blues after last weeks upset keeping us on track for promotion.

Goals from new boy James Dodd with 2, Lee Wharton and Craig Bodkin resulted in a surprisingly easy away win against Salem which could have easily been doubled with the missed chances. 3 first half goals finishing the contest through Dodd and Wharton. And a fine solo effort from Bodkin 10 minutes from time resulting in another 3 points in the bag before next weeks Cup match at home to Mixenden.

Warley Rangers 8  v  3 AFC Lords  (28 Jan 06)

Well what a difference a week makes!!!!!!!!!

Words were said before kick-off about the excuses that we can't play on our home pitch. And manager Paul Hiley sent the boys out in a determined frame of mind!! Or so it seemed.

Lords arrived with no subs or even a manager for the kick-off, but that didn't stop them being first to the ball 2nd,3rd or even 4th ball. A good strike by their midfielder and a almighty blunder between keeper Carradice and centre half Parker resulted in us being 2 down after 20 minutes. Dodd replied on 35 to reduce the arrears.

Again harsh words at half time, unfortunately the boys decided to leak in a 3rd. So manager decided to warm subs up, the returning Gornall and Whelan, only for the boys to go goal crazy!! Dodd finished with 5, Wharton 2  and Kikutz with a penalty at the death. Giving the keeper the eye treatment. The subs did get on eventually!!. Bring on the Old Boys

16th February 2008

Holmfield 0 Warley Rangers 3

Warley continued their improved recent form under new manager Neil Grogan
with a hard fought victory over a determined Holmfield side. The two
midfields were largely cancelling each other out and neither side was able
to gain the upper hand until midway through the first half when a well
worked move from the back via Taylor on the left wing gave Nicholson the
task of side footing into the roof of the net to give Warley the lead.
Warley then started to make the pressure tell and soon after a freekick
from Nicholson was allowed to ping pong around the box until Sam Taylor
slotted home from close range. The second half was a more one sided affair,
but whilst Warley were failing to take their chances Holmfield were still
in the game. Warley finally made it 3-0 when top scorer James Crossland
latched on to a flick on from Taylor and coolly slid the ball past the
holmfield keeper. The Warley defence were given a scare late on when a
mistake from Burke allowed Holmfield to hit the underside of the bar, but
were relieved to see it bounce back into the keeper Carradice hands.

Warley Rangers 1 Halifax Irish Centre 1

Warley Rangers showed again they are not out of their depth in this league
with a good draw against high flying Halifax Irish. On a heavy pitch at
Wellesley barracks it was the Irish that started the better having a lot of
possession but could not find their way past Warley's resolute three man
defence of Paul Burke, Chris Parker & Ian Ward. Warley then managed to get
a foothold on the game and James Crossland and Michael Nicholson both
brought smart saves out of Irish keeper Rab Langley. Warley it was who took
the lead just before half time, when a long throw in from Richard Leonard
caused confusion in the Irish box and top scorer Crossland was on hand to
smash the ball home from close range. The Irish started the second half as
they had started the first and were rewarded from a break down the right,
as the ball came across the six yard box Wolfy Jenkins was unfortunate
enough to slide the ball into his own net. This galvanised Warley though
who missed two good chances through Crossland and Parker near the end.
Warley were reduced to ten men ten minutes from the end when Gareth Kikutz
was sent off for a rash challenge after having earlier being booked. On
balance Warley just about tipped it as they created the most chances and
restricted Irish a couple of long range efforts, but a draw was a fair
result

Warley Rangers 3 Hebden Royd Red Star 5

Warley Rangers got a shock this week when high flying Hebden Royd Red Star
were the visitors to the Barracks.
With manager Grogan's final words to" Keep it tight early on "still fresh
Rangers managed to go two goals down inside the first 3 mins.
The first was a mistake by Burke who gave the ball away to Red Star
striker Bonny who then rounded keeper Carradice to score .
The second again a poor ball out of the Rangers defence was snapped up by
Lee Thomas who crossed for the ever green Watts to head home unmarked,
because all the Rangers defenders stopped claiming Offside.
At last Warley woke up and the in form Crossland got onto a poor back pass
to slot home to make the score 1-2 after 15 mins.
With the wind with Warley they were soon on levell terms Leonard's corner
was headed by Parker but the final touch came with Watts turning the ball
past his own keeper.
ht 2-2
Warley didn't learn from the poor start they made to the first half and Lee
Thomas put Red Star in front early in the second with a neat finish .
When Hebden went 2-4 in front when Watts smashed home the game seemed over,
but even though Warley seemed finished they rallied again and Taylor fired
home to reduce the deficit.
Despite all Warley's efforts with Chris Hall and Joe Fris working hard Red
star sealed the points when senior slotted home from close range.

LEEMING MAKES DREAM DEBUT
Elland Utd 1 Warley Rangers 3

Despite having to make no less than seven changes from the team that went
close against Hebden Royd the previous week Warley Rangers still managed a
comfortable 3-1 victory away to Elland United. Warley manager Neil Grogan
was forced to ring the changers and was without skipper Leonard, star
striker Crossland and centre half Parker to name just three.
Rangers started slowly and went a goal down from the spot after a poor
challenge by Kickuts upended Hepptenstall in the box and the striker made
no mistake beating Carradice with ease.
Their lead only lasted five mins, after earning a corner down the left
Burston sent in a great ball which was matched by a fine header from Peter
Leeming
who was making his first start in the first team.
Rangers were now dominant and soon went in front this time it was Steve
Hall
who won the ball at the back then hit a diagonal ball from which
young speedster Matt Bodkin raced onto and slotted home with ease from the
edge of the box.
The next goal came shortly afterwards when Craig Bodkin pulled the ball
back to Leeming who hit an unstoppable shot from thirty yards into the top
corner.
The only surprise was Warley didn't add to their tally in the first half,
Burston hitting the upright and Chris Hall missing after bursting through
just before the break.
The second half was the same even with the wind at there backs Elland
couldn't break through the defence led well by stand in skipper Paul Burke.
If Rangers had been better in front of goal they would have had more goals
Taylor hitting the post and other chances which seemed harder to miss ,and
the returning from injury Jenkins also guilty of poor finishing.

22nd March 2008

WARLEY RANGERS 1 BRIGHOUSE OB 3

Warley chose this game against bottom club Brighouse OB to put in one of
their worst performance's of the season.
With a good squad to pick from manager Grogan left Parker,Ward and Jenkins
on the bench and had returning captain Leonard at centre half.
Rangers were poor from the off and when keeper Carradice miss kicked a
clearance to an opponent 30 yards out who then hit a scuffed shot which
somehow bobbled and trickled into the net it set the mood for the rest of
the match.
Even when Rangers scored which was a great effort from full back Steve Hall
from outside the box it never lifted the team to a better effort.
It was turning into a bad day at the office as you could normally get away
with a poor game from a couple of players it seemed all were poor today.
Even with the introduction of all three substitutes it didn't spark the
team who fell behind with half hour remaining. Carradice again at fault
dropping a cross under some pressure.
After changing formation to try rescue a point Brighouse got a third on the
break which left Warley with exactly what they deserved from the game
.....nothing.
With Chris Hall, Joe Fris and Matt Bodkin all set to return this week a few
players will be nervous of retaining their place in the team for Saturdays
trip to Sowerby UTD

29th March 2008

SOWERBY UTD 1 WARLEY RANGERS 6

WARLEY GET SIXY

Warley bounced back from last weeks poor showing to hammer F A cup semi
finalists Sowerby Utd 6-1 at a very wet Ryburn Valley high school.
Rangers started brightly and took the lead when 16 year old Joe Fris picked
the ball up in midfield and after weighing up his options hit an
unstoppable shot past the stunned Sowerby keeper.
It was soon two and United had no answer for Rangers fast flowing football
Bodkin's cross field ball picking out Nicholson who drilled home.
Warley's third followed from Leonard's corner which was met with a fine
header at the far post by Burston.
Just before half time the forth goal was created again by Bodkin who after
a great run was fouled in the area by United defender Bicknell, skipper
Lennard made no mistake scoring from the spot.
After the break it was more of the same from Rangers with Hall, Leonard and
Fris bossing the game and at the back Chris Ward , Chris Parker and Paul
Burke
easily keeping the dangerous Wilkinson and Barber quiet.
The goals kept coming for Warley and after the keeper spilled Crossland's
shot Bodkin tapped home.
Rangers final goal again came from the spot this time Burke slotted home
after Burston had been upended.
Manager Grogan was even able to introduce himself into the fray along with
young Joe Anderson to rest midfield duo Leonard and Hall.
To Sowerby's credit they never stopped trying and got a goal late on after
a mistake from the probably freezing cold Carradice in the Warley goal.

5th April 2008

WARLEY RANGERS 3 SIDDAL ATHLETIC 2

Warley kept their decent end of season form up with a hard fought victory
over Siddal Athletic, although the score line suggests the affair was closer
than it actually was. Warley containing a couple of changes to the starting
line up gave a rare start to Martin (wolfy )Jenkins and welcomed Gareth
Kikutz
back into the fold after his suspension, started quite brightly for
a change putting Siddal straight on to the back foot. The 3-5-2 formation
that manager Neil Grogan allowed the midfield to take a grip on the game
and a succession of corners led to the first goal after 15 minutes when
Jenkins cooly sidefooted the ball into the far corner of the net from 20
yards afer good work by fellow centre forward Sam whatsisname. This should
have been the catalyst for further goals, but it wasn't to be due to
lacklustre finishing although Warley Keeper Carradice had virtually nothing
to do in the first half, much to the disappointment of away forward Kendall
who was booked for lashing out. The pitch was standing up very well to the
game and Siddal had more of the possession in the second half but were hit
with a sucker punch in the second half when a great free kick by Burke was
coolly chested down by Sam and side footed home from an acute angle midway
through the second half. This was followed by another goal from a set piece
when from a corner Michael Nicholson found himself in acres of space and
the easy task of nodding the ball into an empty net from 3 yards out. At
this point Warley seemed to take their foot of the pedal and manager Neil
Grogan
decided to make some substitutions, the outstanding Richard Leonard
was taken off as was Sam. Siddal were given what was thought a mere
consolation when a Carradice slip allowed Kendall to put the ball into an
empty net, but there were panic stations when 2 minutes later a free kick
floated into the box was not cleared by the defence and Kendall was allowed
to poke home his second from close range. ThIS led to an uncomfortable last
5 minutes for the home side, but they were able to see it out without any
further scares and should have increased their lead when good work out on
the right by man of the match Stephen Hall provided Jenkins with a tap in
opportunity but somehow he managed to hit the bar!! Two more games left for
the first team, next up Sowerby United

12th April 2008

WARLEY RANGERS 0 SOWERBY UTD 1

Warley lost this game 1-0 it was not the result, but some poor unsporting
behaviour from the opposition which left a bad taste in the mouth.
Having been well beaten only a couple of weeks ago Sowerby came and started
the game in a good manner playing some decent football and causing Rangers
all sorts of problems.
Warley who were already without Jenkins, Ward , Fris and Burston lost
skipper Leonard after only 10 mins and with no other fit midfield options
manager Grogan was forced to play second team goalkeeper Bolton in the
centre of midfield in a holding role.
Things got even worse just after the half hour , Taylor was booked for what
looked like a bad foul but the Sowerby defender reacted and raised his arm
in the direction of Taylor unseen by the referee Salmons who now had it all
on to keep control as things got heated.
Moments later Kickuts was booked along with a Sowerby defender for another
foul and some retaliation.
Right on half time Kickuts burst through and his shot came back off the
upright, what ensued was a disgrace after some pushing which seemed
harmless Kickuts was enveloped by Sowerby players and at least one punch
and even some kicking out in the Warley players direction.
The referee sent a Sowerby player from the field and to everybody's
amazement showed a second yellow to Kickuts for lord only knows what.
At half time both managers tried to calm their players and the second half
was a scrappy affair with Baxter outstanding for Sowerby and the Hall
brothers working hard for Rangers.
The winner for Sowerby came when Forrest's long throw was met by Woodhead
who's header looped into the far corner leaving keeper Carradice with no
chance.
On reflection this was a fair result with Sowerby fully deserving all three
points and ending their loosing streak.
Warley now face last seasons champions Stainland who's dreams of defending
their crown now seem over on wednesday night in their final game of the
season. While next saturday Warley would like to wish Sowerby good look who
face probable new champions Red Star in the Halifax F A cup semi-final.

19th April 16th

Stainland utd 3 Warley Rangers 2

Warley finished their season away at current champions Stainland Utd and
gave a good account of themselves yet again and were unlucky to come away
without at least a point.
With the game being played on a Wednesday night Warley were without most of
their first team squad Leonard , Burke ,Crossland, Burston,Carradice and
Taylor all absent so Rangers chief Grogan had to call on the second team to
fulfil the fixture.
It was a real mix and match team with Bolton in goal, two Warley old pro's
up front in Craig Bodkin and Craig Beazley and then Anderson, Fris, Sutcliffe
and Mat Bodkin all just 17 with Andy Hudson only 18.
Warley started well Fris going close early on but the hosts took the lead
with a long range effort just before half time which lobbed over stand in
keeper Bolton.
Stainland doubled their lead when a quick free kick caught Nicholson
napping down the left flank and the wing man fired home.
Warley then hit straight back  when Mat Bodkin's right wing cross was met by
Nicholson who made up for his earlier error by heading powerfully home.
On another day Rangers may have pulled level but a mixture of bad luck and
poor finishing cost them dear and their hosts put the game safe with a neat
goal on the counter .
All credit to the lads who never gave up and were rewarded right on the
final whistle when Chris Parker met Nicholson's corner with a superb header
which the home keeper never moved for.
All in all it has been a good first season back in the top flight of the
Halifax league. With the players we have now and hopefully more joining
this summer we are in a very good position to move forward as a club. The
young lads are all real prospects and have fitted in really well which all
goes well for the future .
